It has been almost 10 years since the night 10 year old Krystal Surles throat was slashed after witnessing her friend’s murder by Tommy Lynn Sells. In her unwavering account, Krystal recalls the actions of that terrible night, her unbelievable journey to recovery and a secret she kept from the community for years. It was her will to stay alive that finally brought a serial killer to justice.

She interviewed on CBS News. This is her frightening experience, in her own words.

Krystal’s sister Marque Surles: In December 1999, I was in first class. My elder sister Krystal and I were resided with friends in Del Rio in Texas, waiting for my family in Kansas to shift there with us.

I was 7 and Krystal was 10. And we were presently moving down to Del Rio, to start new days with our family. I keep in mind my sister as being kind of dominant and… The age variation was big. And we just didn’t get all along very well. We stayed at the Harris family’s residence. And they had a large family. The oldest son Sean, Laurie, Katy and Justin.

They lived manner of out in the desert. Like, there weren’t a lot of people close to them. It was off in the center of nowhere.

I was sleeping frankly across the hallway from the space Krystal and Katy were sleeping in. I was going to sleep on the floor next to the bed, however they didn’t would like me in there and I was made to go away.

When I couldn’t sleep in that room, I was so stupid. And I remember I just lay in bed for, approximating, two hours just very angry. I was just so angry. I wanted to be there in that room.

I woke up to the sun approaching through the window. And I sat up and I saw a woman standing in my room that I didn’t recognize. And she immediately handed me a pair of shorts and a lavender tank top and said, “Put this on. We got to go”.

At once, maybe five steps away as of my door, was just a river of blood. It looked like someone was tentative, was holding onto belongings. There was blood on the fence, and just it was all over.

Krystal Surles: I don’t ever think on Tommy Lynn Sells. I don’t ever ever give him the instance of day. He’s… …he’s dead to me. It just it makes me in reality thankful…that’s what he did. He didn’t ever take me down at all…and these are joyful tears…I’m just happy to be here.
