Chile News: A huge earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 in Richter scale has hit central Chile, at least killing 64 people, ministers say in initial reports.
The earthquake struck at 0634 GMT about 115-kilometer north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital in Santiago.
President Michelle Bachelet declared a “state of catastrophe,” in affected areas and appealed for calm.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management said “The magnitude of the Chile quake has been confirmed as 8.8; a local tsunami has been confirmed with the highest recorded wave measuring 2.2 meters”.
“The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest; waves may continue for several hours” it said; warning for New Zealanders to stay off seaside and out of the beaches.
A tsunami warning was in consequence for Hawaii Saturday following a massive earthquake that struck central Chile.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also issued a tsunami advisory for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal area from Kodiak to Attu islands.
The first Tsunami waves were likely to arrive in Hawaii at 16:19 EST Saturday.
