Eyjafjallajokull glacierOn 21 March 2010: A volcanic eruption of east of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull glacier (Pictures given below) which is the fifth largest in Iceland has enforced the emigration of more than 500 people and the termination of all flights to and from the island (the Department of Civil Protection said).

The volcanic eruption occurred on 10 p.m. local time last night at the north Atlantic island (Eyjafjallajokull glacier). The volcano explodes along a 1 kilometre-long (0.6 miles) split, running from northeast to southwest. A state of red alert has been declared in communities near the 100 square mile near the glacier.

The Icelandic Red Cross has put up three emergency centers to help the evacuees said by department. The volcano, which hasn’t exploded for more than 1,000 years, is spew out lava from 15 places (the department said).

The Keflavik international airport, Reykjavik airport and Akureyri airport are all closed due to the possibility of ashes which is effecting into engines of the planes. The last time the volcano exploded was in the 1820s.

A volcanic island in the North Atlantic (European), Iceland is largely an arctic desert with glaciers, volcanoes and mountains and agricultural areas in the plains close to the coastline.
