The Louis Majesty cruise ship hit by massive 26-foot waves on Wednesday in the Mediterranean, leaving 2 travellers dead and 6 more wounded.
The 18 years old Louis Majesty sailed for years as Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Majesty. It left the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet in last October.
Louis is one of the major players in Mediterranean cruises, mainly in the Greek Isles and Eastern Mediterranean, where it functions a number of cruise ships.
French maritime authority’s Commander Bernard Celier in Toulon said, “Winds travelling at speed 60 miles per hour had been experienced in the area and these were most likely the cause of the big waves; and not the recent earthquake in Chile”.
With approximately 2000 passengers on board, the cruise ship was situated off Spain’s north-eastern Catalonia region coast when the waves hit it and destroyed several windows.
“It was spectacular”, Claude Cremex 73-year-old of Marseille, France told the Associated Press of the damage sustained by the cruise; “A lot of water came in, many cabins were flooded”.
